Two Doctor of Pharmacy students, Rosemary Call of Gulfport and Brent Crenshaw of Southaven, were inducted into the School of Pharmacy Hall of Fame during spring commencement ceremonies. Both were selected by their classmates for their significant scholastic and professional contributions to the school.

Students choose outstanding teachers

This spring, pharmacy students selected five faculty members to honor for teaching excellence. They chose John Rimoldi and Erin Holmes to receive Teacher of the Year awards and Laurie Warrington to receive the Clinical Sciences Teacher of the Year award. They also selected John Bridges as their Introductory Practice Experience Preceptor of the Year and Richard "Buddy" Ogletree as their Advanced Practice Experience Preceptor of the Year.

The School of Pharmacy honored three alumni this spring for their outstanding careers and contributions to the school and the pharmacy profession. Receiving 2011 Distinguished Alumnus Awards were Phil Ayers (BSPh 84, PharmD 96) of Ridgeland and David Hudson (BSPh 93) of Kosciusko. The Dean's Service Award went to Bob Broadus (BSPh 74) of Madisonville, La.

Four faculty members in the School of Pharmacy are being recognized through the Distinguished Teaching Scholars Program, which rewards faculty for teaching excellence, dedication to student achievement and research on effective teaching and learning. They are Brian Crabtree and Gary Theilman in pharmacy practice, John Rimoldi in medicinal chemistry and David McCaffrey in pharmacy administration.

Ikhlas Khan, director of NCNPR's FDA Center for Excellence in Botanicals

Women seeking relief from the discomforts of menopause—hot flashes, insomnia, weight gain, mood swings, irritability, bone loss, impaired memory and loss of libido—are taking plant-based estrogens, soy and other products to replace the estrogen their ovaries stopped making. Ikhlas Khan is participating in a multi-institutional investigation into the unknowns associated with using these phytoestrogens.

Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Medicine Daniel Riche

A botanical compound is undergoing clinical research study to determine whether it improves cardiovascular health, glucose levels and cognitive function. The compound, pterostilbene (tero-STILL-bean), was licensed from UM for commercial development last year by ChromaDex Corp., which holds worldwide patent rights to the natural product. Daniel Riche is the study's principal investigator.

UM alumna becomes school’s development officer

Raina McClure

Oxford native Raina McClure has joined the UM staff as development officer for the School of Pharmacy. McClure, who spent the last seven years as a pharmaceutical sales representative for Meda Pharmaceuticals and Schering-Plough, is securing financial support to assist the school in programmatic development and to better meet the needs of students and faculty.
