New practitioner receives award

Daniel M. Riche, assistant professor of pharmacy practice and medicine, will become the latest holder of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy’s New Clinical Practitioner Award this month. The award honors a new clinical practitioner who has made outstanding contributions to patient health and/or the practice of clinical pharmacy.

David D. Allen named pharmacy school’s new dean

David D. Allen

David D. Allen has been selected to succeed Barbara G. Wells as dean of the School of Pharmacy.

"Excellence in pharmacy education, research, patient care and service at the pharmacy school and the university are exciting traditions, and I am grateful to be afforded the opportunity to be part of their future," said Allen, founding dean of the College of Pharmacy at Northeast Ohio Medical University.

The University of Mississippi’s provost, search committee chair and others say Allen will be a wonderful dean.

First Pharmacy Alumni Chapter Scholarship awarded

Laura Schrock, the inaugural recipient of the Pharmacy Alumni Chapter Scholarship, was introduced to members of the chapter's board of directors during their campus meeting last month. While Schrock told them it was an honor to receive the scholarship, James Pittman, chapter president, said the first recipient is an amazing representative of the type of student being attracted to Ole Miss.

One professor has simulated a pharmacy resident’s day while on call with the use of Twitter, while another has stimulated research in Mississippi. Another professor has garnered $2.7 million for research over the past three years, while yet another has generated four patents and contracts and grants totaling $5 million. All four professors received awards for their stellar work at their fall retreat.

Tradition of leadership continued by graduates

The pharmacy school and its pharmacy administration department have a great tradition of producing individuals committed to advancing the practice of pharmacy. A milestone in that tradition was reached this year when four Ole Miss pharmacy alumni became national officers of Phi Lambda Sigma, the pharmacy leadership society.

David J. McCaffrey III has spent countless hours counseling prospective and current students, as well as their parents. With infinite patience and knowledge, he has helped students navigate university and pharmacy school application, admission and course-selection processes. Recognizing his passion for helping students, the university presented McCaffrey with its faculty Excellence in Advising Award.
