Dr.
Cheng is
a registered Professional Hydro-geologist, and has recently been
elected as the
Vice President for Academic Affairs of the American Institute of
Hydrology. He
also organized the First International Conference on Water Resources
Management
(Greece, 2001); and the first
International
Conference on Saltwater Intrusion and Coastal Aquifers- Monitoring,
Modeling,
and Management, (Morocco, 2001). Dr. Cheng has been
working in the
areas of poromechanics and numerical methods. Poromechanics studies
materials
with pores and embedded inhomogenieties, which can be rocks permeated
with
fluids, foams filled with air, or resin embedded with fibers. These
materials
can interact with mechanical, magnetic, and electric forces. Dr. Cheng
is the
recipient of the Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize of
ASCE, the
Basic Research Award of the U.S. National Committee for Rock Mechanics,
National Research Council, and the Eminent Scientist Award of Wessex
Institute
of Technology. He is the author and editor of about a dozen books and
has
published about 100 journal articles.
