  1. Introduction of new members and membership update: Prof. Ackerman, who has a distinguished service to the committee, has regretfully resigned. Nik Katopodes has been named as a Control Group Member filling the position of Prof. Ackerman. New members Ahmad Ghassemi and Thanos Papanicolaou are introduced.

  2. Report of Committee Activities:

·        The Fluids Committee is organizing 16 special sessions in the EM2000 conference: 5 sessions on environmental fluid mechanics (co-organized with the Turbulence Committee), 3 sessions on boundary element methods, 2 sessions on fluids and structures, 1 session on moving boundary/interface problems, 1 session on biomechanics, and 4 sessions on granular flow (by the Granular Flow Subcommittee)

·        A special panel discussion session on Education and Future Trends in Environmental Fluid Mechanics has been organized. Members are encouraged to attend.

·        The journal editing activities are reported.

·        The task committee book project "Environmental Fluid Mechanics—Theory and Applications" has been in good progress.

3.      Other Announcement:

·        The next EM Conference in 2001 is an ASCE/ASME/SES joint conference, in La Jolla, California. Members are encouraged to organize special sessions.

·        Members are also encouraged to organize special sessions for the ASCE Annual Convention.

·        Fluids Committee will strengthen its cooperation with the Turbulence Committee. The Chair of Turbulence Committee Mohammed Hajj is introduced.

4.      New Proposal:

·        Based on an initial proposal by Michelle Teng, it was proposed that the Fluids Committee edit a special issue on “Advanced Experimental Techniques in Environmental Fluid Mechanics” for the Journal of Engineering Mechanics.  After an extensive discussion, it is decided that the effort will be a joint one with the Turbulence Committee. The title is changed to “Techniques in Experimental Fluid Mechanics”.  Four guest editors, two from each committee, will be selected to undertake this effort.

  Respectfully submitted: Alex Cheng
