Issues Discussed:

  1. Review of Committee Rosters and Nomination of New Members

Wang stated that Fluids Committee currently has 24 members and is in need of recruiting more members to help out the committee activities. It was concluded that the chair should try the effort to recruit 5 to 6 new members and possibly submit the nominations to Dr. Alex Chen, our ExCom contact person before October 1. Wang encourages the meeting participants to nominate potential candidates for the new members.

  1. Report of Journal Paper Submission and Review Status

Wang reported that since October 2000, a total of 45 manuscripts (including 6 papers for the planned special issue of JEM) in the fluids area have been received for consideration of publication in the Journal of Engineering Mechanics (or a total of 28 manuscripts from 6/1/01 to 6/1/02). For those 45 manuscripts, 26 have completed the review process. 12 papers have been accepted, 1 tentatively accepted, 13 rejected, and the rest 19 papers are currently being reviewed. The acceptance rate is about 50%.

  1. Update on the Environmental Fluid Mechanics Book Project

The Fluids Committee has been editing a book to be published by ASCE Press. The book is entitled “Environmental Fluid Mechanics - Theory and Applications”. The editors are Drs. Hayley Shen, Alex Cheng, Michelle Teng, and Keh-Han Wang. In all, 11 chapters have been submitted, reviewed, and edited. Hayley reported that the complete manuscripts have been sent to ASCE publishing department for printing. Thanks to Dr. Hayley Shen to lead the completion of this book project.

4.      Report on the Editing of a Special Issue for the Journal of Engineering Mechanics

Wang reported that the Fluids and Turbulence Committees are collaborating to edit a special issue for the ASCE Journal of Engineering Mechanics. The title of the special issue is “Advanced Experimental Techniques in Environmental Fluid Mechanics” and the guest editors are Keh-Han Wang, Michelle Teng (Fluids Committee), Mohammad Hajj, and H. C. Chen (Turbulence Committee). Thus far, we received 14 papers (6 from Fluids Committee and 8 from Turbulence Committee). Papers were sent out for review. The tentative schedule of publishing this special issue is set to be spring 2003.

5.      Report on the Technical sessions Organized for EM2002

Wang reported that Fluids Committee Organizes 6 Fluids sessions (~30 papers) for the 15th Engineering Mechanics Conference (EM2002). The 6 sessions are Hydrodynamics I, Hydrodynamics II, Sediment Transport, Modeling of Natural Hazards, Poromechanics, and Hydrodynamic Modeling. In addition, Fluids Committee and Turbulent Committee jointly organized one session in Environmental Fluid Mechanics.

6.      Planning Technical Sessions for the 2003 Engineering Mechanics Conference

The next Engineering Mechanics Conference will be held on the University of Washington campus in Seattle, July16-18 in 2003. The information about the conference can be found at http://www.ce.washington.edu/em2003.

No specific sessions were proposed at the meeting. However, the focus will be on the areas of Hydrodynamics, Hydrodynamic Modeling, Environmental Fluid Mechanics, Sediment Transports and others. Members are welcome to propose and organize sessions in the fluids area for EM 2003 (please contact Wang).

7.      Organizing a NSF Workshop on Fluid Mechanics Teaching and Research in Civil Engineering

As the funding opportunity for basic Fluid Mechanics research decreases substantially and the Fluid Mechanics teaching in civil engineering departments becomes less emphasized and playing a minority role, it is desire to organize a NSF Workshop to promote the Fluid Mechanics teaching and research in civil engineering. The committee will search for the appropriate Divisions or contact persons in National Science Foundation to initialize the idea and explore the possibility of organizing such a workshop. The committee also welcomes suggestions from members and is looking for members willing to lead this project.

8.      Nomination for the von Karman Award

The committee can nominate a scholar for this award and will be working on selecting a potential candidates.
