ASCE EMD Fluids Technical Committee Annual Report

(August 1, 2003 – June 30, 2004)

submitted by committee chair Michelle Teng

  1. Committee Membership:

During the past year, the fluids committee added 4 new members: Professors Altinakar and Fox from University of Mississippi, Professor Sanders from UC Irvine, and Professor Morvan from University of Nottingham in UK. The current membership of the fluids committee stands at 28.

  1. Papers Edited for ASCE Journal of Engineering Mechanics:

During the past 12 months from July 2003 to June 2004, the fluids committee (Teng and Wang) received 23 papers submitted to JEM for processing. Among the 23 papers, 15 are new submissions and 8 are revised or resubmitted papers. For the 15 new submissions, 9 are from Asia, 5 from the US, and 1 from Canada.

So far, among the 23 papers received, 17 have completed the review process while 6 are currently under review. For the 17 completed papers, 8 were accepted, 5 required re-submission and 4 were declined.

In response to the authors’ requests, a web page was established to update the authors of their paper review status automatically: http://www.eng.hawaii.edu/~teng/JEM.html

  1. Sessions Organized for EM-2004

The fluids committee members organized 7 sessions with a total of 28 papers for the EM-2004 conference. The sessions are:

-         Computational Fluid Dynamics (Brett Sanders and Herve Morvan)

-         Environmental Fluid Mechanics (Andy Chan)

-         Fluid Mechanics of Lakes and Reservoirs (Ben Hodges)

-         Fluid-Structure Interaction (Keh Han Wang and Andy Chan)

-         Micro-Sensors (Nik Katopodes)

-         Porous Media (Alex Cheng, in collaboration with the poromechanics committee)

-         Sediment Transport (Scott Yost)

The fluids committee is grateful to our committee member and EM-2004 organizing committee member James Kirby for reviewing and arranging all fluids sessions for our committee.

  1. Developed Two Proposals

The following two proposals have been developed by our committee and submitted to the EMD Executive Committee for review and approval:

(1)   Development of a Web-Based Resource Center for Verification and Validation of Computational Fluid Dynamics Codes in Civil Engineering (Sanders, Shen and Teng) – ranked as Top 2 proposal by ASCE EMD Executive Committee, funding pending by ASCE Technical Activity Council

(2)   Establishment of a Best Student EM Conference Paper Award in Fluid Mechanics (Katopodes, Hodges, and Yost) – Approved by ASCE/EMD Executive Committee in June, 2004

  1. First Best Student Conference Paper Award in Fluid Mechanics Awarded at EM-2004

The award sub-committee of the fluids committee (Hung for Katopodes, Hodges and Yost) evaluated all the student papers presented at the EM-2004 conference at the University of Delaware in June 2004. The award committee selected P. Samothrakis from the University of Michigan to receive the first Best Student Conference Paper Award in Fluids Mechanics. This was also the first student paper award given out by the ASCE Engineering Mechanics Division in recent years.

  1. Successful Nomination of a Fluids Scholar for the ASCE von Karman Medal

Professor Theodore T.Y. Wu of Caltech was nominated by our committee and was selected by ASCE to receive the prestigious ASCE von Karman medal for 2004. The nomination efforts were led by committee members Shen, Chwang, Hung and Teng.

  1. Co-Sponsored a Special Symposium

In collaboration with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)’s Ocean Engineering Committee, the ASCE Fluids Technical Committee co-organized a special symposium on Reflection and Outlook of Engineering Mechanics in honor of Professor Theodore Y. Wu. The symposium was held during ASME’s annual OMAE conference in Vancouver in June 2004. About 50 papers were presented at the symposium and a book based on the symposium papers will be published by World Scientific Publishing Co. The organizing efforts were led by committee members Chwang, Hung, Cheng, Wang and Teng.
