1.      Chair’s Comment (Cheng)

The Poromechanics Committee is in its second year of existence, established on October 1, 2003. Currently there are 31 committee members. 13 members attended the committee meeting. Three members couldn’t make the meeting time, but met with the committee chair on a separate lunch meeting the next day. There were another 3 members present at the conference. Hence with 19 members in the conference, the participation rate was very good.

By have a keynote lecture by Huyghe and the Biot Lecture by Cowin, the Poromechanics committee received good exposure in this conference.

2.      JEM Associate Editor Report (Cheng)

The annual report was distributed and the editorial statistics was commented. The progress of the special issue Porodynamics honoring Frenkel was reported.

3.      Biot Conference (Abousleiman)

Younane Abousleiman, the Biot conference chair, reported the progress of the organization of the conference. The Poromechanics Committee fully supports this conference.

4.      Organization of Poromechanics Sessions

8 sessions are organized in the EM 2004 conference. The 2005 conference at LSU is one week following the Biot conference. The session organization might be affected due to the activities in the Biot conference. The following members offered organizing special sessions in 2005:

  • 3 sessions of Biologically inspired porous materials, Hellmich & Katti
  • Shock waves in porous media, Lopatnikov

The chair will send email to other members to solicit special session organization.
