During summer orientation sessions for freshmen:
Students are assigned an advisor according to the major they indicated when applying to the University (advisor name, location and time provided upon check-in) who will discuss course selection for the Fall semester. Students without declared majors are assigned to advisors specifically for Undecided students. In the professional schools (Accountancy, Applied Sciences and Professional Studies, Business, Education, Engineering, Pharmacy) specific advising assignments may be adjusted at the Academic School meetings. Following advising, students will go to computer labs (TBA) to enter their schedules.
Please note that the advisor who a student sees during orientation may or may not be the advisor to whom the student is assigned during the academic year (for Fall and Spring priority registration) students should refer to the Fall and Spring priority registration instructions below to determine who their advisor is.
- Summer orientation sessions for transfer students, and
- August orientation sessions for new students:
Students will be assigned to advisors during their Academic School (Liberal Arts, Accountancy, Applied Sciences and Professional Studies, Business, Education, Engineering, Pharmacy) meetings. Advisors will discuss course selection for the upcoming semester.
During Fall and Spring priority registration:
See: http://www.olemiss.edu/depts/registrar for dates. Academic advising is handled by each school or college that best meets the needs of their students. For example, students in the College of Liberal Arts are assigned to specific faculty members for academic advising. Students in the School of Business Administration and the School of Accountancy are given academic advising through a centralized system in which advising schedules and advisors are available at a central location during priority registration periods.
Liberal Arts-Undecided students (students without declared majors) are assigned to an advisor in the Academic Support Center. Students should call RSVP (662-915-7787) to learn who their academic advisor is, or may consult the appropriate Advising Coordinator (see following), and should make an appointment with their advisor before the priority registration period.
The Academic Support Center schedules appointments for Undecided students appointments from September 1 through October 20th; please note that due to the large number of Undecided students served by this office, we will need to see students for advisement during this extended period. Once pre-registration begins in late October, our time will be much more limited and we will have to shift to walk-in (with waiting for an available appointment) or group advising.
You may reach us by phone at 915-5970, by email (asc@olemiss.edu), via our web page (http://www.olemiss.edu/depts/asc) or by stopping by 350 Martindale.
If you have decided on a major it is important that you declare that major immediately with the appropriate Dean's office (e.g. Liberal Arts, Accountancy, Applied Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Pharmacy) by completing a 'Change of Major" form available in your Dean's office. It is important that you identify yourself to the appropriate Dean's office as soon as you have selected a major in order to ensure proper academic advisement towards a timely graduation and to gather degree and career information, etc.
Upon meeting with their academic advisor, students will be provided a personal identification number (PIN), which will allow them to register either via 662-915-7787 or on the web: http://www.cc.olemiss.edu Note that the PIN changes each semester, and that students must meet with their advisor to receive their PIN.
