Campus Recreation

Hello mom and dad,

Hope this finds you well. A lot has been happening at the university this first six weeks, and right now there is a good chance that you have a son or daughter who just participated in recruitment. If your son or daughter didn’t, they’re probably wondering what all the fuss is about. The fact of the matter is that while only about 33 percent of the campus is active in the Greek system, about half of our freshmen participate in formal recruitment. Regardless of their participation or affiliation, we hope you recognize that there are over 230 student organizations on this campus in which to get involved. One wonderful way to meet people, get involved and just plain have fun is to participate in the many activities that encompass the Department of Campus Recreation, which from top to bottom is a blast. You’ll read more from Shannon Baker, our assistant director of Ole Miss Outdoors (OMOD) in this issue.

Even though it seems like school just started, it is nearing the time that students will preregister for the spring semester and winter intersession. Dr. Ann Canty, our assistant provost and acting director of the Academic Support Center provides helpful information about both and a link for additional information below.

On a very sad note, we lost our first student over Fall Parent and Family Weekend—freshman Bradley Jameson died as the result of a fall early Saturday morning. Please keep the Jameson family and friends in your hearts and prayers. Despite that heart-wrenching loss, we had a wonderful Fall Parent and Family Weekend and appreciate those of you who were here and participated. We encourage you to get in touch with our office and let us know what we can do for you regarding Parent and Family Weekend. We’ve already gotten some good feedback and are looking for more. We’re here to serve you!

Monday was Rebel Letter Day if your student lives on campus.
We delivered 4,000 letters to more than 1,300 residents
over the past week. If you didnât send a letter, that
doesnât mean you canât still write your son or daughter
an old-fashioned letter! I know they would love to get it in
their P.O. Box.

Midterms are right around the corner, and you’ll see some stress soon if you haven’t already. Hang in there and let them go through it. For many it is a wake-up call to do better; for others it’s a culmination of their hard work. Start thinking now about the conversation you will have with your student about midterms, and try to remember that you gave birth to him/her before you start the conversation.

Thanks again to all of you for entrusting us with your sons and daughters.

Academic Support Center

Dr. Ann Canty

Assistant Provost and Acting Director of the Academic Support Center

Welcome to the Academic Support Center! The ASC serves as the advising and support unit for students in liberal arts without declared majors and for students majoring in the health sciences. The ASC offers several programs designed to facilitate academic success, from improving study skills (AST and EDLD 101) to mentoring first-generation college students (STARS) and answering general questions via e-adviser. We are planning a Majors Fair on Wednesday, October 10, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Lyceum Circle, so students can receive information from faculty and staff about choosing a major. Please take a look at the ASC Web site for more information: http://www.olemiss.edu/depts/asc/ . We welcome your questions and input!

ADVISING NEWS

It’s almost time to sign up for winter intersession and spring 2008 classes. The priority registration period begins on Friday, October 26, and ends on Friday, November 23. Students must consult with their advisers to plan the next semester’s schedule; their advisers will remove the adviser hold so that students may register when their priority registration window opens. If your student is liberal arts undecided, he or she was assigned an adviser in the Academic Support Center and has probably received an e-mail reminder about making an advising appointment. Our phone number is 662-915-5970; we’re located on the third floor of Martindale, and our office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

If your student has declared a major and has been assigned a faculty adviser, he or she can make an appointment with the faculty adviser from Friday, October 19 to Friday, November 2. Your student can log on to Campus Management and choose Adviser Information from the menu to be sure of the name of the adviser.  If no adviser is listed, please ask your student to call the college or school in which he or she declared a major, such as the College of Liberal Arts, School of Business Administration or School of Applied Sciences.

Thank you.

Campus Recreation

Shannon Baker

Assistant Director of Ole Miss Outdoors

“We’re having fun!” said Bill Kingery, director of Campus Recreation, when asked what was going on in the world of the Turner Center and Outdoor Sports Complex.

Campus Recreation is the department on campus dedicated to providing exciting wellness opportunities for all students, whether they are interested in joining Bikini Boot Camp (a group exercise class designed to tone participants into shape for swim season), or they want to lay out for a deep pass in the intramural flag football season. Whatever their passion is, we have it … fitness, outdoors, intramural and club sports, aquatics and informal recreation; there truly is something for everyone.

Encourage your student to visit the Turner Center to learn more about our programs; the fitness center offers popular programs such as personal training and group fitness classes, along with new cardio and strength training equipment.  Intramural Sports is currently registering for the punt, pass & kick competition, wallyball, freshman flag football and Texas hold ’em poker. Ole Miss Outdoors wants students to join in on some awesome trips, including hang gliding, mountain biking, sailing and canoeing, backpacking and snow skiing; no experience necessary! Swim lessons and lifeguard classes are what’s happening in the pool, and the facilities at the Turner Center and Outdoor Sports Complex are open and ready for students to play a pickup game of basketball, tennis, soccer, Frisbee … any sport their heart desires!

Parents: Remind your students to stop by Turner Room 214; they’ll be glad they did.
