I am currently a graduate student. After I became a graduate/adjunct instructor, I am no longer getting Blackboard email notifications to my UM Gmail account. What happened?

UM supports two email systems. UM Gmail is the primary email service for students. UM Mail is the primary email service for faculty and staff. UM Gmail email addresses end with @go.olemiss.edu while UM Mail email addresses end with @olemiss.edu.

When a graduate student becomes an instructor, UM issues the individual a separate UM Mail account. At that point, official university communication will be directed to the individual's UM Mail account, including Blackboard notifications. At the same time, the individual will retain his/her UM Gmail account.

So in the case when an individual stopped receiving Blackboard email notifications after becoming an instructor, the individual most likely has the email being delivered to his/her UM Mail account.

In order to check your UM Mail, visit https://ummail.olemiss.edu and login using your UM WebID and associated password. You can also set up your email client or smartphone to retrieve your UM Gmail and UM Mail automatically.

If you need further assistance with setting up email clients, please contact the IT Helpdesk at 662-915-5222 or helpdesk@olemiss.edu.

I am a graduate student. Last semester, I was an instructor but I am not teaching now. Currently, I am unable to read my UM Mail, but my UM Gmail works. Can you help?

UM supports two email systems. UM Gmail is the primary email service for students. UM Mail is the primary email service for faculty and staff. UM Gmail email addresses end with @go.olemiss.edu while UM Mail email addresses end with @olemiss.edu.

When a graduate student is no longer in a teaching role, the individual will lose access to his/her UM Mail account. The change occurs only after the individual is no longer in an instructor role at UM.

If you need further assistance, please contact the IT Helpdesk at 662-915-5222 or helpdesk@olemiss.edu.

I notice students receive substantially more space in UM Gmail than faculty do with the Vault. Why?

UM Mail is the on-premises mail server maintained by IT. Even with appropriate security protocols in practice, email is not a secure means for communicating sensitive information. UM employees should not use email to share sensitive data, such as social security numbers, driver's license numbers, and credit card numbers. Read the Information Confidentiality/Security policy for details concerning the permitted and restricted uses of data.

I am a University employee. Do I have to use UM Mail? I prefer Yahoo! Mail.

For personal use, you may choose any number of cloud email solutions.

For official correspondence on behalf of UM, the IT Appropriate Use policy states, "Official UM email correspondence must originate from a UM email account on the UM Mail (Exchange) server or a registered, on-campus, departmental email server. Exceptions include email to support instructional activities, which may originate from UM Gmail, and extenuating circumstances where access to UM email accounts is limited."
