Kees Gispen


Kees Gispen is Professor of History at the University of Mississippi, where he has taught German and European history since 1983.  Gispen also teaches in the Croft Institute for International Studies, where he serves as Associate Director.  Gispen received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1981. Publications include New Profession, Old Order: Engineers and German Society, 1815-1914 (Cambridge University Press, 1989, paperback reprint 2004), Poems in Steel: National Socialism and the Politics of Inventing from Weimar to Bonn (Berghahn Books, fall 2001, spring 2002), an edited volume on the American South in comparative perspective, and articles and chapters in books on the social history of technology, professionalization, and the engineering occupation in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Germany.  In 2006 he published "Der gefesselte Prometheus: Die Ingenieure in Grossbrittannien und in den Vereinigten Staaten 1750-1950," in Geschichte des Ingenieurs: Ein Beruf in sechs Jahrtausenden, ed. Walter Kaiser and Wolfgang Koenig (Munich: Hanser Verlag).  Gispen was Executive Secretary and Treasurer of the Conference Group for Central European History from 1997 to 2005.  He is a member of the editorial board of Central European History (Cambridge Journals).
