University of Scouting -- January xx, 2013


Below you will find the Yocona Area Council 2013 University of Scouting Course Schedule for each division. Please read each description carefully and plan your personal schedule carefully.

Make sure not to schedule more than one class in the same time slot. Early registration is recommended to make sure you get your requested schedule. Register early because some classes may fill up.

There is a schedule worksheet available on the Documents page.

All courses will be taught at Harrisburg Baptist Church, Tupelo, Mississippi. The Opening Ceremony, Lunch, and Closing Ceremony will be held in a TBD location.

Need information on how to assist with a Scout's Own Service? This course will give you tips and ideas on how to assist your Chaplin. Are you interested in the Faith based awards? This course will also help you find resources to assist your youth in completing the program for their sepcific faith.

This course will focus on the Youth Protection Guidelines for Cubscouts and Boy Scouts.

This course will focus on the Youth Protection Guidelines for Cubscouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturing Youth and Leders.

This course will address the Woodbadge course and its requirements. This is meant to be an information course to promote the upcoming course in our council.

Learn how to run 'em and how to score 'em. Pinewood Derbies, Raingutter Regattas, and Space Derbies are favorite activities for the Pack! Got Derbies?

CS304Webelos to Scouts Transition -- 1 hour Rusty Rasberry
Our most important job as Cub Scout leaders is to prepare our boys for Boy Scouting. Learn how to assist your scouts and parents in making the most important transition in their Scouting career. This session will put on emphasis on the Arrow of Light requirements for Webelos and help you find the right troop for each scout.

CS401Cubmaster and Pack Meetings -- 1 hour TBD
Pack meetings by the book, Program planning, Pack finance, Recruting new leaders, The Pack Committee, Recharters. The Who, What and How of Pack Management. Includes a simulated meeting.

Are you looking for something to enhance your Cub Scout Program. We have the solution, Belt Loops! Learn how to integrate the Academics and Sports programs into your Cub program at any level.

CS500Cub Scout Shooting Sports Orientation -- 2+ hours Kevin Owens & Mike Johnson
Are you interested in being trained as a range master for BB Gun and Archery? This course will give you the training necessary to work with your youth when ranges are available at District and Council events. Having multiple trained range masters allows more time for youth to shoot and shortens the waiting times. Remember: Cub Scout shooting sports programs may be conducted only on a district or council level where there are properly trained supervisors and all standards for BSA shooting sports are enforced. All shooting ranges in the Cub Scout program must be supervised by a qualified range master who is at least 18 years of age and who meets the minimum requirements.
Successful completion of the Cub Scout Shooting Sports Orientation will fulfill the practical requirements for the leader to conduct Cub Scout shooting sports programs at council sponsored camps (day camp, resident camp, family camp) only. These activities are to be conducted on approved ranges, under the direction of a NCS Shooting Sports Director or NRA, RSO. Activities are limited to BB Guns and Archery. Certification is valid for 2 years

Learn how to prepare a scout for his Eagle project. Course includes how to select a project, step-by-step instructions on writing a strong proposal, and how to properly prepare the Eagle application.

Learn the history of the Order of the Arrow (OA) and its tie-in to our Council, what the OA is, how to obtain membership, and the benefits the OA can bring to a Scout troop.

BS400Leave No Trace -- 2 hours John Peter Ford
You unit doesn't need to step off the trail to practice Leave No Trace. Prepare for your next outdoor experience and put your outdoor ethics to the test while you learn about the seven principles of Leave No Trace.

Improve advancement with proven ideas for building advancement into your annual planning calendar including a skills make-up day; merit badge campouts; recruting merit badge counselors, and more!

BS402Warm Winter Camping -- 1 hour TBD
This course will teach the Scouter how to produce a Unit program that raises the probabilities of a successful Winter Campout. The topis of instruction will cover; outdoor skills of staying warm, the technique of dressing in layers, the importance of menu planning, sleeping bag skills, leader tools to support a structured program.
