Mississippi Members of Congress: Congressional District Maps

The U.S constitution requires that seats in the House of Representatives are divided among the states on the basis of population (with the exception that every state is entitled to at least one representative). A decennial census determines the apportionment of seats among states, and the Mississippi Legislature redraws congressional districts after each census to create districts within the state that are equal in population.

Before becoming a state in 1817, a single, non-voting delegate represented the Mississippi Territory in Congress. The number of U.S. Representatives from Mississippi at any one time has varied from between one and eight.

These maps not only illustrate the changing boundaries of congressional districts in Mississippi, they also reflect the redrawing of county boundaries throughout the state’s history.
