Mary-Haston Leary was stunned to learn she was to become the first student recipient of the University of Mississippi’s highest award for service. However, the honor was foreseeable for those familiar with her efforts to improve the lives of others through her work with her church, her school and other organizations such as Lovepacks and More Than a Meal.

UM search for antifungal antibiotics marks 30th year

What began in 1984 as a contract to screen compounds for activity against infections threatening the lives of AIDS patients is one of the longest continually funded antifungal research programs in the history of the National Institutes of Health. The program focuses on screening compounds for antifungal activity and their ability to work with existing antifungal antibiotics to restore their effectiveness.

New award honors faculty member and student

Created to honor a longtime School of Pharmacy professor and administrator, the inaugural Charles D. Hufford Graduate Student Award was presented this spring to Amanda Waters, a May Ph.D. graduate going to work for the National Cancer Institute this fall. The award honors Hufford for developing the school’s internationally renowned pharmacognosy program.

Departments reorganized to support research enterprise

The Thad Cochran Research Center anchors the pharmacy school's academic and research enterprise.

The School of Pharmacy has reorganized its departments to better support its world-renowned research enterprise. The new Department of BioMolecular Sciences is now home to medicinal chemistry, pharmacognosy, pharmacology and environmental toxicology research programs, and pharmaceutics has become the Department of Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery.

Ross garners third medal for scientific collaboration

For almost four decades, Samir Ross has been collaborating with scientists around the world to isolate, identify and evaluate the biological activity of natural products. That work has earned him a bronze and a gold medal from a university in Kazakhstan and a silver medal from a university in the Czech Republic.

Scholarship created to honor alumnus’ 60-year reunion

Because of Walter J. Pierron Jr.’s fondness for the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy and his interest in the welfare of its students, Pierron’s daughter and son-in-law created a scholarship in his name with a $25,000 gift in conjunction with his 60-year class reunion at Pharmacy Alumni Weekend in April.
