Student conducts first study on autistic adults’ quality of life

Krutika Jariwala-Parikh, pharmacy administration doctoral student, has conducted the first U.S. study on quality of life among adults with autism. The project explored various issues that affect autistic adults, such as social support and coping techniques. Its results are timely, as Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant signed an autism insurance reform bill into law in March.

Pharmacy student receives APhA Foundation scholarship

The American Pharmacists Association Foundation Student Scholarship Program has awarded Kelsey Stephens a $1,000 scholarship. Stephens, a second-year professional student from Greenwood, is president-elect of the University of Mississippi chapter of the APhA-Academy of Student Pharmacists. The scholarship is named in honor of Gloria Francke, a nationally renowned leader in pharmacy.

Soumyajit Majumdar assumes associate dean role

A longtime faculty member of the School of Pharmacy, Soumyajit Majumdar has been named pharmacy’s associate dean for research and graduate programs. Majumdar, who serves as associate director of the Pii Center for Pharmaceutical Technology and co-director of the Hands-on Course in Tablet Technology, plans to facilitate research collaboration and develop graduate programs.

Jackson ninth-graders participate in Pre-College Day

The School of Pharmacy hosted 31 ninth-graders from Jackson Public Schools for Pre-College Day. Sponsored by Walgreens, the event provided an opportunity for high school students to learn more about the pharmacy profession. The school has partnered with Walgreens since 2007 to increase diversity among its student body.

Army senior scientist honored during Alumni Weekend

One of only 28 senior scientists in the U.S. Army, Jeffery Steevens (PhD 99) was honored as the School of Pharmacy’s Distinguished Alumnus of the Year on April 18. Steevens specializes in the area of biotechnology and ensures that the military’s new tools are safe for both the soldiers and the environment.
