School honors three at faculty retreat

Three faculty members were recognized for their dedication to research, service and innovative teaching at the School of Pharmacy’s annual faculty retreat in June. Babu L. Tekwani, John Bentley and Jay Pitcock received the Cumberland Pharmaceuticals Inc. Faculty Research Award, Faculty Service Award and Faculty Instructional Innovation Award, respectively.

Students get pharmacy experience in Peru

During a medical mission trip in the mountains of Peru this summer, six pharmacy students gained practical experience and a deeper understanding of the importance of service. From filling prescriptions to fitting reading glasses, the team had an impact on the lives of the Quechua people.

PY4 lands national scholarship

Fourth-year professional pharmacy student Cody Tawater has been chosen to participate in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy’s Walmart Scholars Program. The goal of the program is to encourage careers in academic pharmacy. Tawater’s $1,000 scholarship allowed him to attend AACP’s annual meeting and network with faculty and scholars from across the country.

UMMC selects pharmacy professor for Nelson Order

Meagan Brown receives a stole, which symbolizes her induction into the Nelson Order.

Recognized for her commitment to pharmacy education, Meagan Brown, clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice, was inducted into the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s Norman C. Nelson Order of Teaching Excellence this spring. She was one of 19 selected from UMMC’s six schools.

Cammi Thornton, senior research and development chemist, has studied various contaminants and their effects on organisms at the School of Pharmacy for nine years. Inspired to work in this field by a former professor, Thornton is paying it forward by training graduate students and encouraging them to help improve the environment.
