The Library holds the annual tax records for various Mississippi counties up to about 1902, including tax records from the territorial period from 1801-1817. . The exact information which can be found in the tax rolls varies somewhat from year to year, but they contain detailed information on both real and personal property and include categories for crops, livestock, land, manufacturing equipment, and, for slaves for years before and during the American Civil War. Tax rolls held are from the following counties, in addition to Lafayette: Adams, Amite, Baldwin, Claiborne, Clarke, Choctaw, Coahoma, Copiah, Convington, Forrest, Franklin, Greene, George, Grenada, Hancock, Harrison, Hinds, Itawamba, Jackson, Jefferson, Jasper, Lawrence, Marshall, Madison, Marion, Mobile, Monroe, Panola, Pearl River, Perry, Quitman, Rankin, Sharkey, Simpson, Union, Washington, Warren, Wayne, Wilkinson, Yazoo.

PLANTATION RECORDS: 1748-1901 [catalog record for series]
Microfiche. Drawn from the Records of 21 Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas plantations held in the archives of the LSU Library. Included in the collection are personal and business papers from a free Black planter, a young girl's diary, several collections of family papers, and several diaries dealing with plantation life. This complements the more extensive, later collection - "Records of Ante-bellum Southern Plantations." There is no printed guide or finding aid. Find detailed catalog records for all 21 plantations by searching under series title - "Plantation Records."

RECORDS OF ANTE-BELLUM SOUTHERN PLANTATIONS [catalog record]
Microfilm. (186 reels filed under series title by subseries.) Includes planter's diaries, correspondence, financial records and medical records for dozens of Southern plantations drawn from archival collections throughout the U.S. These manuscripts offer insight into every aspect of plantation life, including daily work routines, family affairs, women's roles, racial attitudes, slave/master relations, and cultural life. The Library owns series A-D, F (pt.1), G (pt.3), I (pt.3), I (pt.3), J (pt.6), N (pt.1). Guides to each subseries are located on the guides shelf at call number HD1471.U5 R43.
