UPDATE: In response to the joint resolution of the Associated Student Body and Faculty Senate, endorsed by the Staff Council and the Graduate Student Council, calling for The University of Mississippi to cease flying the current state flag of Mississippi on campus grounds, the administration has lowered and furled the flag in a ceremony in the Lyceum Circle on the morning of Monday, October 26, 2015. The flag will be preserved in the University Archives along with resolutions from students, faculty and staff calling for its removal. You can read more about this here.
The Faculty Senate commends the Associated Student Body for their leadership in this matter and for the prompt response by the administration which acknowledges the need to ensure that our campus models the UM Creed's call for "respect for the dignity of each person."
“The Senate of the Faculty shall be empowered to make recommendations to the Chancellor and Academic Council on policies affecting the University and to advise on such matters as the Chancellor shall lay before it. It shall also keep the General Faculty fully informed of its recommendations.”
